• New research is showing some genetic component in diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. However, lifestyle factors play a key part in the disease's progression.

• Insulin helps manage diabetes, but doesn't cure it. It helps remove glucose from the bloodstream keeping blood sugar levels in check. However, taking insulin doesn't actually correct the underlying problem.
